Dear Sirs:
We were just at DTSC, Department of Toxic Substances Control Board, yesterday and
spoke with Maryam Tasnif-Abbasi, project manager. She informed us the clean-up was
currently on hold (more than 4 years) because CEQA is currently checking the site (at local
level-the city of Riverside is handling the package with CEQA), due to dioxins and furans, so
apparently the toxic spill of July 7 th 2003 is now ‘airborne’? and from the Draft by Frank
Gonzales, C. Hg., Engineeering Geologist, Cypress Geological Services Unit; Cypress (GSU).
This has now penetrated deeper than the less than 10 feet soil samples, PCB’s and
perchlorate are in the four wells on the site and may have served as a pathway for
contaminant transport in storm water runoff reaching the Santa Ana River. see page 5-Draft.
We request that this project NOT be handled at local city and county
levels. They have vested interest in the project along with the developer, FRA,
Friends of Riverside Airport, and Mr. H. Chuck Cox.
Enclosing our minutes from our meeting yesterday and our notes derived from the
Draft, but also enclosing the Draft. Our expressed concerns are that our community is NOT
safe at this present time and the delay is now putting other communities at risk, in addition
to the Wetlands, our water source, Santa Ana River, which ultimately flows into the ocean.
If the toxicity is now at risk of affecting our air quality, we will soon be experiencing
the Santa Ana’s, warm to hot winds that will intensify the dioxins and furans, this will not be
Good L .
Your immediate attention to this project is urgently requested.
Sincerely,
Danielle Carrington
